The bear community is a subculture in the gay community. Bears are gay men with stocky or heavyset builds, and usually have hairy bodies and facial hair.
Bears often exhibit an outwardly masculine appearance. Some bears place great importance on presenting a hyper-masculine image and shun interaction with men who display effeminate style and mannerisms. Bears are typically contrasted with twinks.
There is much debate as to the definition of a bear, with some saying that anyone who self-identifies as a bear is a bear, and others arguing that bears must have certain physical characteristics, such as a stocky build, hairy chest, and facial hair.

The chubby community is a subculture in the gay community.
Chubbies are gay men who are generally big and heavy, with big bellies. There is some overlap between the chubby community and the bear community. (It is, in some ways, parallel to the BBW subculture, which is primarily heterosexual.)
This community has, for the most part, insulated themselves from the gay community at large; there are bars, organizations and social events specifically catering to this subculture, and allow for members of the chubby and bear communities to socialize with each other and develop social networks.
In the last several years, large regional social events have developed; they often feature pageants (much like beauty pagents but more sexual in attitude) where titles are given to winners. (Example: "Mr. Chubby International" and "Mr. Chaser International"). In the United States, there is an annual national event, Convergence. There is also an annual event in Europe, European Big Men's Convergence. These events are held in different cities each year and are usually hosted by that city's local big men's organization.

Some terminology relating to the chubby community includes
chubby or chub - a man with a big belly or overweight. Plural is chubbies.
daddy - an older man, usually with big belly or overweight. Plural is Daddies
bear - a man with facial hair, typically with a hairy chest and body and a stocky or heavyset build; often older (or older looking) and displaying a masculine appearance and mannerisms
cub - a young version of a bear
chubby chaser or chaser - a term that refers to someone, usually a smaller man, who is not a chubby man or bear himself, but is sexually or romantically attracted to them (this term is used in various communities to describe an outsider who has sexual attraction to people within the community)
chub for chub (also spelled chub4chub) - a chubby who is sexually or romantically attracted to other chubbies

History
Ron Suresha's anthology "Bears On Bears" indicates that, while casual social networks for chubby men and chasers had long been in existence, the first organized social group in the United States (Girth & Mirth) formed in 1976 in San Francisco. The following year, a chapter was organized in Boston, and in 1978 the New York chapter started. Conventions were held in cities such as San Francisco, Chicago, and New York City as early as 1977 or 1978 with large numbers of chubbies and chasers attending. The first meeting to use the name Convergence in the United States was held in Seattle in 1986. Several chapters are now active across the United States, mostly in large and diverse cities.
